About The Club

A Brief History Of The Club

Walton Hockey Club was formed in 1932 as a mixed team under the leadership of Captain Tottenham M.C. Soon after, the club included separate mens and ladies matches. However due to the outbreak of war in 1939 most of the men were called up into service and the club went in to virtual hibernation untill 1945.
During the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s the clubs ladies team was highly successful, rarely fielding a non-county player and including more than one international player. One that stands out the most is Jo Ross Smith, who held the record for scoring the most individual number of goals in a single game, when she scored 5 goals against Ireland.
In the 60’s the men's  team were gaining their share of success and by now were fielding 4  Saturday teams and in the late 70’s and early 80's the men's 1st XI won   Surrey Div 1, were promoted from the Hampshire/Surrey regional league after 2 seasons and then spent 3 years in the South League achieving as high as 3rd place.

1995 Saw the merging of Walton Hockey Club and their long time local rivals Weybridge Hawks. Later in that same year the men's 1st and 2nd XI were disbanded when many Weybridge Hawks players left to form Old Georgians Hockey Club. Conrad Ray, Formerly of Weybridge Hawks took over as the 1st XI captain and they withdrew from the league.
In 1997 Walton & Weybridge Hawks Hockey Club moved from their original pitch at Ashley Park (Walton) to Vandals Rugby Club on Desborough Island. But continued to play on the astroturf at Reeds School. When the prospect of a new astroturf pitch at Vandals failed due to planning, a new project materialised at St Paul’s Catholic College, Sunbury.
In the spring of the new millennium the new astroturf at St Paul’s was opened, and with investment from the club of over £100,000 a lovely old pavilion near the astroturf pitch has been turned into a modern facility with new changing rooms & showers, bar area and new kitchen.
On Tuesdays Richard Murfitt trains the school at hockey, colts training started on Sunday mornings under Conrad Ray, club training is on Tuesday evenings, and within a short space of time the club has grown to 7 teams plus a mixed team, including the re-forming of the ladies teams. The ladies 1st X1 has quickly climbed the leagues with record goal differences.
Today WWHHC has a total of 7 teams

Mens: 1st, 2nd ,3rd, 4th XI and veterans

Ladies: 1st and 2nd XI
